OATS and Grafts

This week in ISM, I spent a large amount of my time conducting research for my final product. After my weekly visit with Rachel, she gave me homework to research the different types of grafts used to repair an ACL during surgery, and I took notes over them for about an hour. It was refreshing and exciting to expand my knowledge past what I knew, which was really only the patellar tendon graft because that is the one my surgeon used for my surgery. Then I spent about a half hour researching the OATS procedure, because the patient whose session I shadowed during my mentor visit was doing her rehab after having this procedure done. This is a kind of cartilage transfer that is necessary for people who have cartilage that is unhealthy or dead in their knees. The patient was a former athlete, and she and I bonded over having knee problems thanks to sports. I spent a lot of the visit interacting with her and learning about the procedure and recovery process. It was nice to learn about a different sports induced knee injury - sometimes I forget it’s not just the ACL, although it feels like it usually is! I had a very productive week in ISM and I am ready to tackle the next one head on.
